New Yorkers have special needs when it comes to our technology. We don’t have a car to stash cables in, or to charge up our phones in — and we often find ourselves out and around the city for hours at a time, or from day into evening. So we need to be prepared for almost anything!
Here are our 5 favorite technology accessories for Mac, iPhone, and iPad users in New York City.
1. Travel USB cable
Scosche makes some cool cables for the iPad and iPhone that are pretty small so it’s easy to have it on you at all times.
2. Mophie battery
If your iPhone always dies after lunch, get a battery so you can top up. Mophie makes some nice ones at different sizes, weights, and price points. And the best thing about a free-standing battery instead of a Mophie case is you can use it on either the iPhone or the iPad.
3. Noise-cancelling headphones
For those difficult subway rides! In-ear, at a great price: Polk Audio UltraFocus 6000, $80 at Amazon.
For over-ear, more expensive but definitely better quality, and they fold for portability: AKG K 490 NC, $250
4. Wall charger
Sometimes it’s good to carry around a wall charger with multiple outlets plus USB outlets. So you can charge up almost anything, and you can share the wall power with others and make new friends, instead of fighting over the outlet at the coffee shop.
The best one I’ve seen with both power outlets and USB ports, plus it’s a surge protector, is this Belkin BST 300 model at $30. It’s not super tiny but you do get 3 outlets and 2 USB ports!
5. Laptop backpack
You need a nice big, sturdy backpack for carrying around your Mac and its accessories. Many of our favorites are from Brenthaven—check out all the styles they have to offer.
